Bone Broth    


Over the last few years we have seen a great return to traditional cooking and nutrition. And for a good reason. Looking at the general availability of nutrients from simple, home prepared meals is astonishing when compared to the processed and pre-packaged meals you can pick up from the supermarket. Conversely to common belief, the preparation of these super nutritious foods is not difficult, overly time consuming or even very costly.

A perfect example is bone broth. It can be cooked from any leftover carcass or bones, for example a roast chicken. Instead of throwing the chicken carcass into the bin use it to make a delicious and nutritious bone broth to boost your health. It generally keeps a couple of days in a sealed container in the fridge or you can also freeze any excess for later consumption. For best benefit, enjoy a glass daily for a week, then two or three times per week. If you manage to catch a cold or you are recovering from illness or injury, you can have this healing potion two or three times per day.

Health benefits of bone broth.

Helps heal and seal your gut, and promotes healthy digestion: The gelatin found in bone broth is a hydrophilic colloid. It attracts and holds liquids, including digestive juices, thereby supporting proper digestion

Inhibits infection caused by cold and flu viruses, etc.: A study published over a decade ago found that chicken soup indeed has medicinal qualities, significantly mitigating infection

Reduces joint pain and inflammation, courtesy of chondroitin sulphates, glucosamine, and other compounds extracted from the boiled down cartilage

Fights inflammation: Amino acids such as glycine, proline, and arginine all have anti-inflammatory effects. Arginine, for example, has been found to be particularly beneficial for the treatment of sepsis5 (whole-body inflammation).
Glycine also has calming effects, which may help you sleep better

Promotes strong, healthy bones: As mentioned above, bone broth contains high amounts of calcium, magnesium, and other nutrients that play an important role in healthy bone formation

Promotes healthy hair and nail growth, thanks to the gelatin in the broth

Simple Chicken Broth recipe:

  1. After eating your free range chicken, simply dump the carcass into a large pot
  2. Add chicken feet if you have some handy
  3. Fill up with lots of water
  4. Throw in a chopped onion, a large chunk of ginger and a few cloves of garlic, also a chopped carrot and a celery stick go nicely.
  5. Add a couple of tea spoons of raw apple cider vinegar
  6. Add herbs, such as parsley, coriander, bay leaves, basil, oregano or anything you want
  7. Add a bit of sea salt and a goodly helping of black pepper corns
  8. Bring to boil and leave it slowly bubbling away for about 6 hours.
  9. Strain the soup
  10. Enjoy.

Total preparation time can be as little as 10 -15 minutes.
